Featured: Are Bank Holiday weekends the best for weddings?
Hi Everyone I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend whatever your religious persuasion, personally speaking any excuse for a free day off work works for me. 🙂 but with the long weekend and Michael and Shauneen’s wedding on Saturday, it got me thinking.. Are Bank Holiday weekends the best for weddings?
There is a free extra day off work (providing you are employed by a company that covers your bank holiday days)
This works both for you as the couple as it means that you have 1 day extra that you don’t have to take out of your annual leave for your honeymoon YAY!
For Guests it means that they don’t have to travel home and get ready for work after your wedding on a Sunday and start the week feeling zonked YAY! Also your guests from further afield will be able to delay leaving at the crack of dawn to get home to get back in time for work on Monday.
Possible savings on room rates
If it’s one of the ambiguous bank holidays like the 2nd one in May that not everyone gets you might find you get a better deal on you “wedding guest” room rate if your guests choose to stay on an extra night.
Taking advantage of savings offered on Sundays
Lots of hotels and Venues offer huge savings for Sunday weddings compared to Saturdays. the Bank holiday is the ideal time to take full advantage of this with everyone off on Monday, the party wont have to be cut short for people who have work the next day.
Hotels might charge more
There is the potential for many hotels to see your wedding as lost revenue over a bank holiday weekend. Many of your guests will only stay the night of your wedding taking up a room that they could have potentially booked for the whole weekend so may reflect that in your “wedding rate” room price.
Travel may be disrupted or more costly
Trains are often delayed over bank holidays for scheduled works (WHY DO THEY DO THIS ON DAYS THAT PEOPLE WANT TO GET PLACES WHEN THEY COULD DO IT AT NIGHT????? RANT RANT RANT..)
Flights are just often delayed or schedules changed over holidays just due to the volume of people using them I guess but still something to consider.
Not everyone will have the same bank holiday days
And no I don’t just mean that main land UK have different days off to NI, but something that is far more common in NI than in any other part of the UK, is not all companies observe the same bank holidays. Since moving here I have works for 3 different companies and each has had its own opinion on what counted as a bank holiday, for example some I had St’ Patricks day and not the Good Friday, Some I have had both. Some your get 2 days for the 12th July and lose the day at the end of August some you don’t.
But overall I guess that it depends on what works best for you whether the potential increased cost and possible disrupted travel is worth that extra day off or not for you. Oh yeah and just in case you were wondering if your wedding fall on a bank holiday here is a handy link to the Bank holidays in NI next year 🙂
